In measuring the side of a rectangle, there is an excess of 5% on one side and 2% deficit on the other. Then the error percent in the area is

  1. A3.3
  2. B3.0
  3. C2.9Correct
  4. D2.7

Answer: C. 2.9

Explanation

Let the length and breadth of the rectangle be 20 cm and 50 cm respectively. => Area = A = 20 × 50 = 1000 cm 2 5 Length is taken 5% in excess, => New length = 20 + ( 100 × 20) = 21 cm 2 Similarly, new breadth = 50 − ( 100 × 50) = 49 cm => New area = A′ = 21 × 49 = 1029 cm 2 (1029−1000) ∴ Error percent in the area = 1000 × 100 = 2.9%
