SSC CHSL 2020 · Question 53 of 91

A boat can travel with a speed of 19 km/h in still water. If the speed of the stream is 3 km/h, then what will be the total time (in hours) taken by the boat to go 88 km downstream and 24 km upstream?

Speed, Time and Distance

  1. A5
  2. B4.5
  3. C5.5Correct
  4. D4

Answer: C. 5.5

Explanation

Given: Speed of boat in still water = 19kmph Speed of stream = 3kmph Formula: Downstream speed = Speed of boat in still water + Speed of stream Upstream speed = Speed of boat in still water - Speed of stream Calculation: Downstream speed = 19 + 3 = 22 kmph Upstream speed = 19 - 3 = 16kmph Required time = 88/22 + 24/16 = 4 + 3/2 = 5.5 ∴ total time (in hours) taken by the boat to go 88 km downstream and 24 km upstream is 5.5 hours.
