ibps-so 2016 · Question 46 of 394

The passbook printers, the pin-pad devices and the note counters at the branches of Chandrabhaga Urban Bank are attached to the teller workstations through interfaces over which the bits of each character leave the workstation one after another, along a single data path, in a de nite order, with start and stop bits framing each character. The engineer has explained that this is why a single thin cable su ces and why such a cable may be run to a device standing several metres away, whereas the older printer interface, which carried eight bits side by side upon eight separate wires at the same instant, needed a thick cable and could not be run far without the bits ceasing to arrive together. Serial communication is correctly described as the transmission of:

  1. ASeveral bits at a time, side by side, over as many separate wires as there are bits in the character
  2. BOne bit at a time, in sequence, over a single channel or wire, so that fewer conductors are needed and greater distances can be spanned than with parallel transmissionCorrect
  3. COne character at a time in each direction alternately, neither end being able to send while the other is sending
  4. DA continuous stream of bits with no framing of any kind, the receiver recovering the character boundaries from the clock alone
  5. EData in both directions at the same instant over a single wire, the two streams being separated by their frequencies

Answer: B. One bit at a time, in sequence, over a single channel or wire, so that fewer conductors are needed and greater distances can be spanned than with parallel transmission
