The average of five numbers is 32 and the average of last three numbers is 40 and the ratio of the 1st and 2nd number is 3:5. Find the difference between first and second number.

Sum of the 1st and 2nd numbers = 5 × 32 − 3 × 40 = 160 − 120 = 40. 3x + 5x = 40, so 8x = 40, x = 5. Required difference = 5x − 3x = 2x = 10.
