Prelims

General Studies Paper I (200 marks, 150 questions, objective)

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social and Economic geography of India and the World
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues etc.
  • Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change that do not require subject specialization
  • General Science

General Studies Paper II - CSAT (200 marks, 100 questions, qualifying - minimum 33%)

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude) and data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency) - Class X level

Paper I: General Hindi (150 marks, descriptive)

  • Comprehension of given prose passage and questions
  • Summary writing (Sanshepana)
  • Official and demi-official letter writing, office orders, notifications, circulars
  • Word knowledge and usage: prefixes and suffixes, antonyms, one word for a phrase, spelling and sentence correction
  • Idioms and proverbs (Lokokti and Muhavre)

Paper II: Essay (150 marks, descriptive)

  • Three essays of 700 words each from three sections
  • Section A: Literature and Culture, Social Sphere and Political Sphere
  • Section B: Science, Environment and Technology, Economic Sphere, Agriculture, Industry and Trade
  • Section C: National and International Events, Natural Calamities (landslide, earthquake, deluge, drought etc.), National Development Programmes and Projects

Paper III: General Studies I (200 marks)

  • History of Indian culture: salient aspects of art forms, literature and architecture from ancient to modern times
  • Modern Indian history (1757-1947): significant events, personalities and issues
  • The Freedom Struggle: its various stages and important contributors from different parts of the country
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country (till 1965)
  • History of the world from the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century (French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, World Wars, redrawing of national boundaries)
  • Indian society: diversity, role of women, poverty, urbanization, globalization

Paper IV: General Studies II (200 marks)

  • Indian Constitution: historical underpinnings, evolution, features, amendments, significant provisions and basic structure
  • Functions and responsibilities of the Union and the States; federal structure; devolution of powers and finances to local levels
  • Role of the Finance Commission in Centre-State financial relations
  • Separation of powers, dispute redressal mechanisms and alternative dispute redressal institutions
  • Comparison of the Indian constitutional scheme with that of other major democratic countries
  • Governance of Uttar Pradesh: state administrative structure and welfare schemes

Paper V: General Studies III (200 marks)

  • Indian economy: planning, growth, development, employment
  • Agriculture, land reforms, food processing and related industries
  • Science and Technology: developments, IT, space, biotechnology
  • Environment: conservation, environmental pollution and degradation
  • Disaster management and internal security
  • Uttar Pradesh economy: irrigation, energy, infrastructure and industrial development

Paper VI: General Studies IV - Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude (200 marks)

  • Ethics and human interface: essence, determinants and consequences of ethics in human actions
  • Attitude: content, structure, function and its influence on thought and behaviour
  • Emotional intelligence: concepts and their utilities in administration and governance
  • Public service values and ethics in public administration
  • Probity in governance: accountability, ethical governance, corporate governance
  • Case studies on above issues

Paper VII: General Studies V - Uttar Pradesh Special (200 marks)

  • History of Uttar Pradesh: ancient to modern, freedom struggle in UP, social reform movements
  • Culture of Uttar Pradesh: art, architecture, literature, folk traditions
  • Economy of Uttar Pradesh: main features, state budgets, infrastructure, physical resources
  • UP government schemes, projects and planned development for welfare, human resources and skill development
  • Investment in UP: issues and impact; public finance, taxation, One District One Product (ODOP) policy

Paper VIII: General Studies VI - Uttar Pradesh Special (200 marks)

  • Geography of Uttar Pradesh: location, relief and structure, climate, irrigation, minerals, drainage system, vegetation
  • Power resources, infrastructure and industrial development of UP
  • Natural resources of UP: soil, water, air, forests, grasslands, wetlands; climate and weather forecasting
  • Pollution and environmental issues: UP Pollution Control Board and its functions
  • Current affairs of Uttar Pradesh
Interview

Since the 2022 cycle the optional-subject papers were replaced by GS Paper V and GS Paper VI (UP-specific). Mains total is 1500 marks across 8 papers; Interview is 100 marks. Negative marking of 1/3 applies in Prelims. Mains paper-wise marks: General Hindi 150, Essay 150, GS I-VI 200 each.
