Official WBPSC key (Series A): (A) Respiratory roots. Pneumatophores are specialized lateral roots found in mangrove plants and wetland trees that grow in waterlogged or swampy soils. Because the waterlogged soil is deficient in oxygen, these roots grow vertically upward—away from gravity, making them negatively geotropic—to absorb oxygen directly from the air through tiny pores called lenticels.
