The 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976 (also known as the Mini Constitution ) added the words “Socialist” and “Secular” to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. Before the amendment, the Preamble read: “Sovereign Democratic Republic.” After the amendment, it became: “Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic.” The words “Sovereign” and “Republic” were already part of the original Preamble adopted in 1949 .
