SSC CHSL 2025 · Question 115 of 333

Read the passage and answer the following questions: In modern households, electrical devices are as common as furniture. From refrigerators and washing machines to smart televisions and microwave ovens, these appliances have transformed domestic life. However, their increasing presence has also heightened the risks, particularly for children, whose natural curiosity often overrides caution. Electrica! devices operate on currents that can cause severe injury or even death if mishandled. Young children, unaware of these dangers, may insert fingers or objects into sockets, tug at dangling cords, or attempt to open appliance panels. Such actions can result in shocks, burns, or mechanical harm. Even low voltage devices, if defective or poorly maintained, can be hazardous. The responsibility for preventing accidents rests largely with adults. Installing socket covers, keeping cords out of reach, and unplugging appliances when not in use are basic precautions. More advanced measures include using Residual Current Devices {ReDs), which automtizally cut off power during faults, and ensuring all wiring complies with safety standards. Regular inspection of devices is equality critical, as frayed wires or exposed components can turn everyday items into hidden threats. Education plays a vital role. Teaching children the “look, don’t touch” rule, explaining the dangers of electricity in age-appropriate terms, and supervising them around devices are all effective strategies. Safety is not merely a matter of physical barriers but also of fostering awareness. Ultimately, a home equipped with electrical conveniences need not be a danger zone. Through vigilant supervision, proper maintenance, and informed habits, families can enjoy technology while safeguarding their youngest members. According to the passage, what is the primary reason children are at risk around electrical devices?
