Backward error correction It also is known as Automatic Repeat ReQuest, ARQ. It uses feedback from the receiver to the transmitter: the receiver signals to the transmitter whether a block of data was received correctly or not. Backward Error Correction algorithms include: Parity bits, CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) & LRC (Longitudinal Redundancy Check) In Data Link Control, backward error correction is used for error correction. Parity check It is a simple way to add redundancy bits to the packets such that the total number of 1's is even (or odd). Single parity check: a single bit is appended to the end of each frame, the bit is 1 if the data portion of the frame has odd number of 1's. Otherwise, it is 0. Checksum This is a block code method where a checksum is created based on the data values in the data blocks to be transmitted using some algorithm and appended to the data. When the receiver gets this data, a new checksum is calculated and compared with the existing checksum. A non-match indicates an error. Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) It is an error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to raw data. Blocks of data entering these systems get a short check value attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents.
