Britishers in 1849 annexed the Khalsa Raj. Khalsa Raj was an independent Sikh kingdom in Punjab founded by Ranjit Singh in 1799. Thereafter the Christian missionaries gradually started to increase their activity. The last Sikh who was converted to Christianity in 1853 was Dalip Singh. The local religious traditions were under the threat and in response to this Sikhs initiated the Singh Sabha movement which sought to revive Sikh doctrine.
