OPSC OCS 2022 · Question 9 of 98
Geography
Statements 1 and 3 are incorrect: The Batagaika crater, also known as the "mega-slump" or the "gateway to the underworld," is a massive gash in the landscape in the Sakha Republic, Russia. It is the largest permafrost crater in the world, and it is growing rapidly. Statements 2 and 4 are correct: Batagaika crater is a serious threat to both Russia and the planet as a whole. The melting permafrost is causing the ground to sink, which could damage infrastructure and displace people in northern and northeastern Russia. The release of organic carbon into the atmosphere is also a major concern, as it could further fuel global warming. The Batagaika crater is a reminder of the urgent need to address climate change. If we do not take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the impacts of climate change will become more severe and widespread.
