A contractor who had undertaken the renovation of a branch premises within a xed time put two masons upon the work, but the terms upon which he had engaged them did not permit both of them to be at the site upon the same day. The rst of the two, working by himself, can complete the whole of the renovation in 12 days, and the second, working by himself, can complete the whole of the same renovation in 24 days. The contractor accordingly set them to work upon alternate days, the rst mason working upon the rst day, the second upon the second day, the rst again upon the third day, and so on until the work was nished. In how many days was the whole of the renovation completed?
