ibps-so 2016 · Question 48 of 394

The technology committee of Chandrabhaga Urban Bank has before it a note comparing four ways of organising stored data. In the rst, the records are arranged as a tree, each record having one parent and possibly many children, and a record is reached by navigating downward from the root. In the second, a record may have several parents as well as several children, the whole forming a graph traversed by following set pointers. In the third, data and the operations upon it are encapsulated together as objects which may inherit from one another. In the fourth, every fact whatever is held in a two-dimensional table of named columns and unordered rows, and the tables are joined to one another only by the values they hold in common, no pointer of any kind being used. The model that holds data only in rows and columns in that manner is the:

  1. ARelational model, in which all data is held in relations, a relation being a table of rows (tuples) and named columns (attributes), and in which relationships are represented by common values rather than by pointersCorrect
  2. BHierarchical model, in which records are arranged in a tree of parent-and-child relationships
  3. CNetwork model, in which a record may participate in several owner sets at once and is reached by following pointers
  4. DObject-oriented model, in which data and the methods that operate upon it are encapsulated together
  5. EObject-relational model, in which user-de ned types and inheritance are added to a table-based store

Answer: A. Relational model, in which all data is held in relations, a relation being a table of rows (tuples) and named columns (attributes), and in which relationships are represented by common values rather…
