ibps-so 2016 · Question 43 of 394

The database designer of Chandrabhaga Urban Bank is settling the properties to be recorded for the entity CUSTOMER. Four have been proposed. The customer number is a single indivisible value. The name is to be held as rst name, middle name and surname, and is therefore made up of several smaller properties which may be addressed either separately or together. The mobile number may be recorded more than once for the same customer, because a customer may register two handsets. The age is not to be stored at all, but is to be worked out whenever it is wanted from the date of birth, which is stored, and the current date. In the terminology of the entity-relationship model, the age of the customer is an example of:

  1. AA composite attribute, which is made up of several smaller attributes of its own
  2. BA derived attribute, whose value is not stored but is computed when required from other stored attributesCorrect
  3. CA multivalued attribute, which may hold more than one value for a single entity instance
  4. DA key attribute, whose value distinguishes one entity instance from every other
  5. EA simple, single-valued attribute, which is indivisible and holds exactly one stored value

Answer: B. A derived attribute, whose value is not stored but is computed when required from other stored attributes

Official answer key verified. Detailed explanation coming soon.
