A custom hiring centre nanced by the branch has been asked by a small cultivator of a rainfed tract to sow his gram crop by the cheapest method available to him, since he owns a pair of bullocks and a country plough and cannot a ord the hire of a seed-cum-fertiliser drill. In the method he proposes, the seed is dropped by hand or through a bamboo tube into the furrow opened by the plough as it moves down the eld, and the furrow is covered by the soil thrown up when the next adjacent furrow is opened, so that sowing and covering go on together as one continuous and regular process. The eld o cer entering the operation in the hire register notes that the method places the seed at a fairly uniform depth and in rows, that it needs no equipment beyond the plough itself, and that it is quite distinct from scattering the seed over the surface or from placing single seeds in holes made for the purpose. The method of sowing so described is

1. ASowing behind the ploughCorrect
2. BBroadcasting
3. CTransplanting
4. DDrilling with a seed-cum-fertiliser drill
