Train ‘A’ running with a speed of 72 km/h crosses a pole in 8.5 seconds. If the time taken by train ‘A’ to cross train ‘B’ running with a speed of 36 km/h and coming from the opposite direction is 11.4 seconds, then find the length of train B.

Explanation

ATQ, Speed of train A = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s Length of train A = 20 × 8.5 = 170 metres Let length of train B = ‘l’ metres Speed of train B = 36 × 5/18 = 10 m/s Relative speed of train A with respect to train B = 20 + 10 = 30 m/s So, l + 170 = 30 × 11.4 = 342 So, l = 342 -170 = 172 metres
