Quadratic Equations
I. 5x2 + 16x + 11 = 0 ⇒ 5x2 + 5x + 11x + 11 = 0 ⇒ 5x(x + 1) + 11(x + 1) = 0 ⇒ (5x + 11) (X + 1) = 0 ⇒ x = –11/5, –1 II. 2y2 + 9y + 10 = 0 ⇒ 2y2 + 4y + 5y + 10 = 0 ⇒ 2y (2y + 2) + 5(y + 2) = 0 ⇒ (2y + 2) (2y + 5) = 0 ⇒ y = –1, –5/2 Hence, relation cannot be established. Alternate Method: if signs of quadratic equation is +ve and +ve respectively then the roots of equation will be -ve and -ve. So, roots of first equation = x = -11/5, -1 So, roots of second equation = y = -1, -5/2 After comparing we can conclude that relationship cannot be established between x and y.
