A boat takes five hours to cover certain distance in upstream and takes two hours to cover the same distance in downstream. If the speed of the stream is 3 km/hr, then find the distance?

Answer: D. d) 20 km

Explanation

Let speed of boat in still water be x kmph And distance be ‘D’ km ATQ 𝐷 =5 𝑥−3 D = 5 (𝑥 − 3) − − − − − (𝑖) And, 𝐷 =2 𝑥+3 D = 2(𝑥 + 3) − − − −(𝑖𝑖) From (i) and (ii) 5(𝑥 − 3) = 2(𝑥 + 3) 5x – 15 = 2x + 6 3𝑥 = 21 ⇒ 𝑥 = 7 𝑘𝑚/ℎ𝑟 So, required distance = 5 × (7 − 3) = 20 𝑘𝑚
