IBPS PO 2020 · Question 33 of 99

Direction: In the question below are given three statements followed by three conclusions numbered I, II, and III. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts. Read all the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the given statements disregarding the commonly known facts. Statements: Only a few birds are only a few tables. Only a few tables are only a few chairs. Conclusions: I. All birds can be table. II. Some birds are chairs.

Syllogism

  1. AOnly I follows
  2. BOnly II follows
  3. CEither I or II follows
  4. DNeither I nor II followsCorrect
  5. EBoth I and II follow

Answer: D. Neither I nor II follows

Explanation

The least possible Venn diagram for the given statements is as follows. Conclusions: I. All birds can be table → False (As only a few birds are tables, some birds are not tables as shown in the diagram, so all birds cannot be table). II. Some birds are chairs → False (As there is no definite relation between birds and chairs). Hence, neither conclusion I nor II follows. NOTE: 'Can be' means possible case.
