Artery Expansion Explained The phenomenon described is the wave-like expansion and recoil of an artery wall caused by the surge of blood pumped from the heart. Physiological Cause: During ventricular systole (heart contraction), a large volume of blood is ejected into the aorta and subsequently into other arteries.
